Down Syndrome

The lexical comprehension of students with DS tends to be similar to their mental age, but where language lags behind is in production.  This is something to keep in mind with English learners with DS; if their mental age is, say, 2 years old, educators must make utterances comprehensible to the mental age of the student. 

There is also a strong preference for gestural communication, in both speaking and listening.
