Down Side Up, a website that is in their words, “gently changing perceptions of Down’s syndrome from within hearts,” provides a great article titled, “Reading and Writing Tips for Children with Down Syndrome”. Some of the suggestions they offer are: making sure the child is in the correct writing position, using pencil grips (motor skill delays for students with DS can make manipulating small things like pencils difficult), and providing pages where a student can trace dots.
As children with DS tend to be visual learners, providing them with a word wall that includes pictures would be of benefit.
There are several writing apps that a child with DS can use to help in letter formation, such as Little Writer – The Tracing App for Kids.
